For the couples who love nature, but want to spend time soaking in comfort, the atmosphere of upstate NY and checking out some pretty epic scenery in the meantime – this is your elopement 101 blog on where to go during your elopement day or weekend.
Time of year – Let’s kick it off right away:
Winter/ Spring
For my ski bunnies and those who love snow… snow… and more snow. The Adirondack mountains have amazing ski towns: Lake Placid and Wilmington. These towns also host beautiful restaurants, spas and hiking trails for those who don’t want to hit the slopes. Peak season for snow sports take place Jan-March, so expect to book your accommodations early. From an elopement viewpoint, you can’t go wrong renting out an A frame cabin and spending time between the snow and warming yourself by the fire. This definitely is your time to bust out the buffalo plaid accessories.
Some of my favorite places to stay during while eloping in the Adirondacks:
Outdoor activities can also include:
Cross country skiing, snowshoeing and ice skating. Low elevation hiking is also an option for a less intense experience. All fun ways to create a eclectic elopement schedule that fits your adventurous side.
Spring
The snow may still be on the mountain tops in early/late spring, but at the base of the hills, you will find greenery and flowers in bloom around late April. Temps are still chilly in the mountains, so make sure to pack layers. Hiking is just starting to kick off, but so is mud season. Take into consideration that rivers will be blue from the colder water melting from snow, so find a river bed to catch some gorgeous elopement photos with the green popping up. Check out the waterfall hikes in the area here that will be an amazing spot for elopement photos or exchanging vows.
Summer/Fall
Summer is a great time to enjoy the mountains as well as the local water hobbies. Renting kayaks, boats and tubing gear is a great way to get your relaxation on, all while catching a swim. White water rafting is one of my favorites, check this article out. Check out this great article on where to hike during the summer months to view beautiful waterfalls and epic mountain views here. Keep in mind, Summer and fall can be BANANAS with tourists (families and leaf peepers alike). Wedding season is from May-Oct, so consider making some plans early, such as restaurant and hotel arrangements. There are typically serge prices for accommodations, so just be ready for car rentals and hotels to be more expensive.
